The market

Why eVTOL, and why now

Urban air mobility

Cities have run out of road. Electric VTOL aircraft promise point-to-point hops over traffic — airport transfers, hospital links, cargo into constrained pads — at a fraction of helicopter noise and fuel cost. The first routes will be short, scheduled and expensive. The personal aircraft underneath that, from AIR One to Part 103 ultralights, is a different market: owners, not passengers.

Emissions, and the limits

Pure-electric models produce no combustion emissions in flight. That is the point. It is also why range is short: batteries are heavy. Hybrid designs (AltoVolo, Zapata AirScooter, Pipistrel Nuuva, CopterPack) trade that purity for hours of endurance. Jet-powered personal flyers are in this table so you can see them — they are not eVTOLs.

UK: CAA and CAP 3169

The Civil Aviation Authority is writing the UK rulebook for crewed eVTOL in CAP 3169 and related AMC material — airworthiness, operations, and the vertiport environment. Vertical Aerospace is the flagship UK air-taxi programme. AltoVolo is the UK personal hybrid. Nothing on this list holds a UK type certificate today.

FAA MOSAIC and Part 103

MOSAIC widens the US light-sport category — the door AIR is walking through with the One. Separately, Part 103 ultralight rules (no licence, tight weight and speed limits) are how Rictor, LEO JetBike, CoolFly and Pivotal Helix intend to reach private owners without a type certificate. Only EHang's EH216-S is fully type-certified anywhere, and that certificate is Chinese CAAC, not FAA or EASA.
